The Real Story of Christmas
The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.
In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated Yule from December 21, the winter solstice, through January. In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs, which they would set on fire. The people would feast until the log burned out, which could take as many as 12 days. The Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would be born during the coming year.
The end of December was a perfect time for celebration in most areas of Europe. At that time of year, most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. In addition, most wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking.
In Germany, people honored the pagan god Oden during the mid-winter holiday. Germans were terrified of Oden, as they believed he made nocturnal flights through the sky to observe his people, and then decide who would prosper or perish. Because of his presence, many people chose to stay inside.
Saturnalia
In Rome, where winters were not as harsh as those in the far north, Saturnalia—a holiday in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture—was celebrated. Beginning in the week leading up to the winter solstice and continuing for a full month, Saturnalia was a hedonistic time, when food and drink were plentiful and the normal Roman social order was turned upside down. For a month, slaves would become masters. Peasants were in command of the city. Business and schools were closed so that everyone could join in the fun.
Also around the time of the winter solstice, Romans observed Juvenalia, a feast honoring the children of Rome. In addition, members of the upper classes often celebrated the birthday of Mithra, the god of the unconquerable sun, on December 25. It was believed that Mithra, an infant god, was born of a rock. For some Romans, Mithra's birthday was the most sacred day of the year.
In the early years of Christianity, Easter was the main holiday; the birth of Jesus was not celebrated. In the fourth century, church officials decided to institute the birth of Jesus as a holiday. Unfortunately, the Bible does not mention date for his birth (a fact Puritans later pointed out in order to deny the legitimacy of the celebration). Although some evidence suggests that his birth may have occurred in the spring (why would shepherds be herding in the middle of winter?), Pope Julius I chose December 25. It is commonly believed that the church chose this date in an effort to adopt and absorb the traditions of the pagan Saturnalia festival. First called the Feast of the Nativity, the custom spread to Egypt by 432 and to England by the end of the sixth century. By the end of the eighth century, the celebration of Christmas had spread all the way to Scandinavia. Today, in the Greek and Russian orthodox churches, Christmas is celebrated 13 days after the 25th, which is also referred to as the Epiphany or Three Kings Day. This is the day it is believed that the three wise men finally found Jesus in the manger.
By holding Christmas at the same time as traditional winter solstice festivals, church leaders increased the chances that Christmas would be popularly embraced, but gave up the ability to dictate how it was celebrated. By the Middle Ages, Christianity had, for the most part, replaced pagan religion. On Christmas, believers attended church, then celebrated raucously in a drunken, carnival-like atmosphere similar to today's Mardi Gras. Each year, a beggar or student would be crowned the "lord of misrule" and eager celebrants played the part of his subjects. The poor would go to the houses of the rich and demand their best food and drink. If owners failed to comply, their visitors would most likely terrorize them with mischief. Christmas became the time of year when the upper classes could repay their real or imagined "debt" to society by entertaining less fortunate citizens.
An Outlaw Christmas
The pilgrims, English separatists that came to America in 1620, were even more orthodox in their Puritan beliefs than Cromwell. As a result, Christmas was not a holiday in early America. From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was actually outlawed in Boston. Anyone exhibiting the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings. By contrast, in the Jamestown settlement, Captain John Smith reported that Christmas was enjoyed by all and passed without incident.
After the American Revolution, English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas. In fact, Congress was in session on December 25, 1789, the first Christmas under America's new constitution. Christmas wasn't declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870.
Irving Reinvents Christmas
It wasn't until the 19th century that Americans began to embrace Christmas. Americans re-invented Christmas, and changed it from a raucous carnival holiday into a family-centered day of peace and nostalgia. But what about the 1800s peaked American interest in the holiday?
The early 19th century was a period of class conflict and turmoil. During this time, unemployment was high and gang rioting by the disenchanted classes often occurred during the Christmas season. In 1828, the New York city council instituted the city's first police force in response to a Christmas riot. This catalyzed certain members of the upper classes to begin to change the way Christmas was celebrated in America.
In 1819, best-selling author Washington Irving wrote The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, gent., a series of stories about the celebration of Christmas in an English manor house. The sketches feature a squire who invited the peasants into his home for the holiday. In contrast to the problems faced in American society, the two groups mingled effortlessly. In Irving's mind, Christmas should be a peaceful, warm-hearted holiday bringing groups together across lines of wealth or social status. Irving's fictitious celebrants enjoyed "ancient customs," including the crowning of a Lord of Misrule. Irving's book, however, was not based on any holiday celebration he had attended – in fact, many historians say that Irving's account actually "invented" tradition by implying that it described the true customs of the season.
A Christmas Carol
Also around this time, English author Charles Dickens created the classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol. The story's message-the importance of charity and good will towards all humankind-struck a powerful chord in the United States and England and showed members of Victorian society the benefits of celebrating the holiday.
The family was also becoming less disciplined and more sensitive to the emotional needs of children during the early 1800s. Christmas provided families with a day when they could lavish attention-and gifts-on their children without appearing to "spoil" them.
As Americans began to embrace Christmas as a perfect family holiday, old customs were unearthed. People looked toward recent immigrants and Catholic and Episcopalian churches to see how the day should be celebrated. In the next 100 years, Americans built a Christmas tradition all their own that included pieces of many other customs, including decorating trees, sending holiday cards, and gift-giving.
Although most families quickly bought into the idea that they were celebrating Christmas how it had been done for centuries, Americans had really re-invented a holiday to fill the cultural needs of a growing nation.

All I want for Christmas is you - Mariah Carey
Watch the clip
I don't want a lot for christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true...
All I want for christmas
Is you...(oooooh, ya)
I don't want a lot for christmas
There is just one thing I need
(And I) don't care about presents
Underneath the christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
(Ahhhh)Santa claus won't make me happy
With a toy on christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for christmas is you...

I won't ask for much this christmas
I won't even wish for snow
(And I)I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe

Maná
MANA - BENDITA
Mana is a traditional term that refers to a concept among the speakers of oceanic languages, including melanesians, polynesians, and Micronesians. It is an impersonal force or quality that resides in people, animals, and inanimate objects and that instills in the appreciative observer a sense of respect or wonder. In ant anthropological discourse, mana as a generalized concept has attained a significant amount of interest; often understood as a precursor to formal religion. It has commonly been interpreted as "the stuff of which magic is formed", as well as the substance of which souls are made.
Modern fantasy fiction, computer and role-playing games, have adopted mana as a term for magic points—an expendable resource out of which magic users form their magical spells.
Mana should not be confused with the Biblical manna (also spelled mana or mannah) which, according to the Bible (Exodus, chapter 16), provided sustenance for the Israelites...(MORE)

Rubén Isaac Albarrán Ortega: (vocals, guitar)

Previously known as "Alicia Ya No Vive Aquí" (a tribute to Martin Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore), the band took its final name from a coffee shop (el Café de Tacuba) located in downtown Mexico City, which opened in 1912 and had its heyday in the 1940's and 1950's, and was representative of the Pachuco scene from the time, something the band would certainly acknowledge as an influence. The Café de Tacuba is still in operation on Tacuba street, in Mexico City's Historic Center.
In their first shows (prior to the release of their first album), people would scream "¡Pinche Juan!" ("Fucking John!") to Rubén because that's the name of one of the band's first underground hits, so he kept the name for the release of the first album. Two years later he got bored and changed it to "Cosme" (a disused name in Spanish) for the release of "Re". Since then, he has changed his name for every album and world tour.

Easier to Run - Linkin Park
replacing this pain with something numb
it's so much easier to go
than face all this pain here all alone
something has been taken
from deep inside of me
a secret i've kept locked away
no one can ever see
wounds so deep they never show
they never go away
like moving pictures in my head
for years and years they've played
Refrão
if i could change i would
take back the pain i would
retrace every wrong move that i made i would
if i could
stand up and take the blame i would
if I can take all the shame to the grave i would (2X)
it's easier to run
replacing this pain with something numb
it's so much easier to go
than face all this pain here all alone
sometimes i remember
the darkness of my past
bringing back these memories
i wish i didn't have
sometimes i think of letting go
and never looking back
and never moving forward so
there would never be a past
Refrao
if i could change i would
take back the pain i would
retrace every wrong move that i made i would
if i could
stand up and take the blame i would
if i could take all the shame to the grave i would

just washing it aside
all of the helplessness inside
pretending i don't feel so misplaced
is so much simpler than change
it's easier to run
replacing this pain with something numb
it's so much easier to go
than face all this pain here all alone
its easier to run

Picasso stolen from Brazil museum
Thieves in Brazil have stolen two paintings said to be worth $100m (£252m) in a dawn raid on Latin America's most renowned museum.
Police said Pablo Picasso's Portrait of Suzanne Bloch, and The Coffee Worker by Brazil's Candido Portinari, were taken from the Museum of Art of Sao Paulo.
The operation, which lasted about three minutes, was caught on security cameras, officials said.
Police investigating the theft are due to give a news conference.
Valuable pieces
The theft took place shortly after 0500 (0700 GMT).
The thieves left behind some of their tools, and police have shut down the museum to search for clues, officials said.
The Portrait of Suzanne Bloch, painted in 1904, is among the most valuable pieces in the museum's collection.
The Coffee Worker (O Lavrador de Cafe) was painted in 1939 and is one of Portinari's most famous works.
O Globo newspaper said that the museum's press service had estimated their joint worth at more than $100m.However, museum spokesman Eduardo Cosomano told the Associated Press news agency that it was difficult to judge their exact monetary value.

Present Simple
The present simple is used to talk about actions we see as long term or permanent. It is very common and very important.
In these examples, we are talking about regular actions or events.
- I drive to work every day.
- She doesn't come very often.
- The games usually start at 8.00 in the evening.
- What do you usually have for breakfast?
In these examples, we are talking about facts.
- Water freezes at 0° C or 32° F.
- I have three children.
- What does this word mean?
- I don't have any of my original teeth left.
In these examples, we are talking about future facts, usually found in a timetable or a chart.
- The plane leaves at 5.00 tomorrow morning.
- Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year.
- Ramadan doesn't begin for another 2 weeks.
- Does the class begin this week or next?
In these examples, we are talking about our thoughts and feelings at the time of speaking. Notice that, although these feelings can be short-term, we use the present simple and not the present continuous.
- I think you are wrong.
- She doesn't want to do it.
- They don't agree with us.

I Believe I Can Fly - R.kelly
Watch the clip
I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms
If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
See I was on the verge of breaking down
Some times silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me
(Riff-oh oh)
If I can see it, then I can be it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see my running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
Oh I believe I can fly
Cause I believe in me
Oh oh oh
If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see my running through that open door
I believe I can fly
(choir-I can fly)
I believe I can fly
(choir-I can fly)
I believe I can fly
(choir-I can fly)
If i just spread my wings
(choir-I can fly)
I can fly
(choir-I can fly)
i can fly
(choir-I can fly)
I can fly
(choir-I can fly)
If I just spread my wings
(choir-I can fly)
Riff-i can fly
choir
I can fly
I can fly
I can fly

Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, author, musician, poet and, of late, disc jockey who has been a major figure in popular music for five decades. Much of Dylan's most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he became an informal chronicler and a reluctant figurehead of American unrest. A number of his songs, such as "Blowin'in the wind" and "The times they are a-changin", became anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movents. His most recent studio album, Moderns Times, released on August 29, 2006, entered the U.S. album charts at #1, making him, at age 65, the oldest living person to top those charts. The Byrds

Throughout their career, they helped forge such subgenres as Folk rock, space rock, raga rock, psychedelic rock, jangle pop, and – on their 1968 album sweetheart of the rodeo - contry rock. After several line-up changes (with lead singer/guitarist Roger Mcguinn as the only consistent member), they broke up in 1973.
Some of their trademark songs include pop covers of Bob Dylan's " Mr. Tambourine Man" and Pete seeger's" Turn! Turn! Turn!", and the originals "I'll Feel a whole lot better", and " Eight miles high"...(More)

Brian Wilson's growing creative ambitions later transformed them into a more artistically innovative group that earned critical praise and influenced many later musicians.
The group initially comprised singer-musician-composer Brian Wilson, his brothers, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike love, and friend Al Jardine. This core quintet, along with early member David Marks and later bandmate Bruce Johnston, were inducted into the Rock and roll hall of fame in 1988. The Beach Boys have often been called "America's Band" and have had thirty-six U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band), including four number one singles...(more)

Albums and singles from Kanye West, Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani also make the top 10s.
Tuesday , Apple released the lists of iTunes' top 10 most-downloaded albums and songs of 2007 ... and, as it turns out, downloaders are a lot like you (or your parents).
Maroon 5's It Won't Be Soon Before Long was the year's most-downloaded album, followed by Amy Winehouse's Back to Black and Kanye West's Graduation. Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry (Personal)" was the most-downloaded song, ahead of Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape" and the Plain White T's' equally ubiquitous "Hey There Delilah."
The top 10s are perhaps most shocking because they are so similar to the Billboard albums chart and Hot 100 singles chart, both of which measure sales at traditional retailers (as well as online sales). To wit: Billboard ranks Daughtry's self-titled debut, Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight and the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack as three of the best-selling albums of 2007, and they each appear on the iTunes list too. Meanwhile, the most-downloaded songs list features Hot 100 mainstays like Akon, Avril Lavigne and Timbaland.
A spokesperson for Apple told MTV News that the company does not release information about just how many times a specific song or album was downloaded, but did point out that since the iTunes Music Store launched in 2003, more than 3 billion songs have been sold through it.
Earlier this year, reports had placed iTunes as the third-largest music retailer in the U.S., behind Wal-Mart and Best Buy.
The best-selling albums of the year, according to Apple:
1. Maroon 5 - It Won't Be Soon Before Long
2. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
3. Kanye West - Graduation
4. Daughtry - Daughtry
5. Colbie Caillat - Coco
6. Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight
7. Various artists - "High School Musical 2" soundtrack
8. Timbaland - Timbaland Presents: Shock Value
9. John Mayer - Continuum
10. Various artists - "Hairspray" soundtrack
The best-selling songs of the year, according to Apple:
